PTO shaft bolts WD45

Are the bolts at both ends of the PTO shaft supposed to act as shear bolts? I pull a 6' Bush Hog mower and spent a lot of time replacing bolts until I put in grade 8. Also does the PTO shaft just slide thru the carrier bearing. The front holes on the shaft are elongated pretty bad and I need to replace it.

I just parted out two AC WCs and both PTOs were junk. One shaft was twisted like a pretzel and the other had all the teeth shelled from the gears in the PTO box. I would rather have the inconvience of replacing sheared bolts than have to replace the expensive pieces.

I have had the same problems with the bolts. I broke one on the cutter and two on the tractor yesterday. It's an aggravation to replace the bolts, but easier than replacing the gearbox which I had to do when we decided to use grade 8 bolts. I currently use grade 5 and don't have trouble unless clearing new ground. As for the shaft, if you remove the rear bearing it will be much easier to pull the shaft out. We drilled our gear box and pto shaft out to a larger hole size to compensate for the wear in both shafts.

I thought I was chasing off the maintenance demons by replacing sheared bolts, but Friday the 13'th got me. Just tore down the pto gear box and will be replacing the shaft. It twisted completely in two. Will buy a slip clutch on Monday. Even shear bolts won't protect your equipment when pushed to the max.

I lost the bolt from the PTO shaft on my WD45 about 3 weeks ago while baling hay. At first one believes that the PTO is ruined! But, then one is relieved to see it is just a missing bolt. I replaced it with a regular grade bolt, but, I put on two nuts torqued against each other to keep the bolt from coming out again. It is my understanding that this is not a shear bolt. I say this because I looked at my other WD45s and they didn't have shear bolts there - but, more importantly, the implements should have their own shear bolt systems (or clutching mechanisms, et cetera). Certainly the baler does. I also spread manure and my spreader has a shear bolt to take the load if a foreign object stops the slinger. Sickle mowers just slip the belt. Other mowers may have a clutch. In my case, I don't have any evidence that the bolt broke, rather, I believe the nut just came off and it fell out.

Those bolts are there to protect the pto gearbox. My father didn't think it would hurt, and wound up replaceing the entire lower gearbox at the tune of $325+. Yes, it slides, but it might be a tight fit. Good luck!
