D15 II Power Steering-how's it work?

I would like to get some understanding of how the power steering systems works. Is the power steering pump just a hydraulic pump? It seems like the p.s. only works with the clutch out.

the power steering pump is under the dis. and runs off the cam gear,that little pump cost near 600 bucks new. I got a D-15 with a bad 3rd gear and no motor I`d sell for that much, Im in S.E. Michigan.

problem could be tractor idle is too slow...my d17 wouldnt turn without engine running WFO but whole front end was worn out too.

POWER STEERING PUMP IS JUST A HYD PUMP THAT IS BELT DRIVEN SO IT IS OPERATIONAL ANYTIME THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. STEERING CYLINDER IS ON RIGHT SIDE OF TRACTOR WHICH HAS A RACK ON THE END OF IT. THIS RACK MESH WITH AN IDLER GEAR AND THE IDLER GEAR IS IN DIRECT MESH WITH THE SECTOR SHAFT GEAR. STEERING VLAVE IS ON RIGHT SIDE OF TRACTOR AND IS HOOKED TO THE STEERING SHAFT

THAT DESCRIPTION WAS FOR THE D14, D15, D17, D19. OTHER TRACTORS ARE DIFFERENT. WHAT MODER TRACTOR DO YOU HAVE?
