D17 shuttle clutch????

I was talking to a guy at a farm sale yesterday and he said that allis used to make an industrial version of a D17 or D19 that had a hand clutch. He said you push lever forward for reverse and rearward for going ahead. He said this setup could be put into a D17 or D19. Sure would be great for loader work. Anybody ever hear of such an animal?

D17 had a shuttle clutch on the forklift versions. Hand lever on the right side gave forward and reverse in at least three forward speeds. Don't know about fourth. Had no hi and low range- just forward and reverse, since the assembly mounted in the same place as the Power Director.

On the gear shift diagram casted on top the reverse is not there. just 1through4 in the same patern as a regular tractor.I guess it is blocked off inside.

I have a D15 industrial with one.Push forward to go forward back to back. It has 4 gears and goes just as fast backwards as it goes fowards.The system was used on forklift tractors and loader units. If they had a pto they were a 1000rpm shaft and turned 875 rpm's.I have seen several D15's and only 1 D17 with it They are fun to drive.

If the tractor was shifted into reverse, then what the guy said is true, but the "normal" way would be the opposite of what the guy said.

You surely wouldn't want to push forward to go in reverse, because there would be a natural tendency for your body to move that direction once the tractor started to move.
Any sudden jerk would make it even worse and if you accidentally ran into something, you be thrown further forward, thus pushing the lever more forward.

If you're running a loader, it would be natural to want to lean into the direction you want to go, not the opposite.
