put new ring gear on and still the dam. starter won't turn the engine over. it kicks in but won't turn the motor. just spins. turning the armature by hand is really tuff. it's full of grease. the brushes are about half gone and arm. is wore looking also like it was ground down. now the motor is hard to turn over also, but i drove it around for awhile before wanting to put a starter on it. anyone with any ideas. i know the starter shop is going to burn me for the rebuilt. trying to keep peace in the homestead and 150.00 is not in the budget. got 45.00 in the starter now. thanx gary

A few months back my WD's starter would spin easily but wouldn't engage the flywheel gear. Took the starter motor COMPLETELY apart and the massive bendix spring was busted. About 20 bucks to Sandy Lake got me a new spring and I was on my way.

thanx dave, i took it apart, but i didn't really look at the spring that good. i'm going to tear it apart again and check it good and if doesn't work i'm going to try a new starter drive, like john t suggested. thanx gary

Your words are a little confusing...you say "it kicks in, wont turn the motor, just spins." Sounds like you're trying to say that the starter spins, but, the starter gear doesn't engage the ring gear. If that's the case, the most likely problem is that your polarity is reversed on the starter. That will make it spin backwards, and the starter gear (bendix) will not extend to engage the ring gear.

If it does engage the ring gear, and wont turn the motor, then make sure all cables are in good shape (no corosion, etc), everything is polished clean (battery terminals, cable ends, starter switch, etc) AND that everything is nice and tight.

These starters draw 70 amps no load, and as much as 600 amps under full load...at 6 volts, thats 3600 watts...a hell of alot of power thru cables the size of your thumb.

Good luck!!

hi jeff i put my + side of jumpers on terminal on starter and grounded the - by just touching the tractor. the starter gear goes forward when hooked up,but just sounds like the gears are stripped(which aren't on the flywheel) it nicked some of the teeth on the new flywheel when i tried it. like you said maybe it's the drive. going to stop at the styarter shop and see what they'll charge to check it out thanx gary

hi john, well i went to the market today and got some good news and bad they said by looking at the starter seems the arm. is pretty wore. told me to clean it up. so i took it completely apart, put it back together and seems to work great. put it on tractor and it just spun like it wasn't even touching anything. i took it off and tried holding str. gear with a screwdriver, jumped right off the da.. floor.you must be right about the starter drive, cause there just isn't much to it. good news is. the guy up there gave me the whole motor off his combine. he already brought me the mag, thinking that was what i needed. so he said might as well take the whole motor and get it out of here. can ya beleive it? maybe i've got the wrong starter!! going to compare.

Gary, some starter drive gears engage into the flywheel by mechanical lever action that pushes them forward prior to electrical (turning) activation, while in others (like the old Ford starters) its the centrifugal force that engages them forward to mesh with the flywheel. Then the drive is like a one way mechanism that allows the starter motor gear to turn the flywheel but free wheel in reverse if the flywheel is turning faster then the starter motor, otherwise the starter bearings would get worn out.

Sooooo o if the motor spins but NOT the flywheel, the starter drive mechanism is failing one way or the other or it or the flywheel has bad or missing teeth. The gear should turn freely one way but be locked to the shaft the other direction.

Gary, that starter will still turn the correct and same direction, REGARDLESS OF POLARITY, i.e. it turns the SAME direction at pos OR neg ground.

If the starting motor spins but NOT the engine, still sounds like a starter drive problem such as the gear teeth or its not engaging sufficient into the flywheels ring gear etc.

Gary, if the starter drive is engaging into the fywheel teeth and the starter motor is spinning but NOT turning the flywheel, that would be a mechanical starter drive problem. If its engaging and not turning itslef or the engine, thats more a starter motor problem.

If the bushings got so worn out the armature was dragging the field poles, that can really ruin the armature n starter. Provided the brushes arent worn so low theyre not making tight contact with the commutator, they should still be okay. Things that can help are to have the commutator cleaned all bright n shiny and the parts all cleaned out and the bushing greased then have a good strong well charged battery and 00 gauge cabkles n see what happens.

You could also have a bad starter switch/solenoid. If when cranking the lights dim way down badly and/or the battery voltage drops drastically, I suspect a bad starter. However if she dotn crank well but the lights dont dim much when cranking it may just be a bad starter switch or solenoid (whatever it has)

Sounds like a brush problem either brushes too short or springs too weak. Not a hard fix.

Starters do turn over hard by hand, old ones or new ones either way. Take it to a good auto parts store and have it checked. Most don't charge you a dime to have it tested and then go from there. Starters do wear out and get weak as they get old. Also starters aren't all that hard to work on as long as the wireing in them is ok. Brushes and bushings are easy to put in if your any good with a wrench.
