Some time back there was a topic of John Deere firsts on Tractor Talk discussion board. I mentioned that the 4620 was the first intercooled tractor. A gentleman reponded by saying that AC had been intercooling engines since the 60's. Could on of you guys educated me on AC intercooled tractors? I would appreciate the information. Thanks.

They had an engine in the 60's that was called the Model 65000. It was a V-12 that was rated for 900hp and 2100+ ftlbs of torque @ 2200 rpm. This engine was turbocharged and intercooled. The intercolling gave it an additional 100hp.

The huge V-12 engines were primarily used in stand-by or back-up generator packages for large buildings such as hospitals and government offices. I can't think of any tractor applications for that particular engine at this time. As far as I know, the first Allis-Chalmers tractor to offer intercooling on the diesel engine was the 7060. The 7080 and the 7580 both also had intercooled engines. Just an FYI-Intercooling is simply a way of cooling the incoming air before it reaches the intake of the engine. This causes the air molecules to shrink so the engine takes in a greater amount of air. More air in a diesel engine means more power.
