Helping my neighbor get his wd in running order. He just bought it this past summer.
Converted to 12v w/ alternator & rewired, fixed 3 flat tires, loosened up hydraulic control valve.
Looked in radiator and noticed that antifreeze looked kinda clear. Tested it and it showed +20.
We're in N Iowa and it needs to be treated for 25 below, minimum. Drained radiator at lower radiator hose petcock and only got 2 gallons out. Filled it up to neck (REALLY slowly) with 50/50 mix and only got 2 gallons back in. I'm not all that familiar with AC, and he doesn't have a manual for it, but I would think that it holds more than 2 gallons. He also has to take the radiator out, as it leaks around the top radiator hose fitting. This looks like it was brazed up before (globs around it) and I think that the sub-zero temps we had for two weeks in December may have froze the mixture and swelled up the top radiator tank, popping the repair loose. Anyway, back to my question, what should his wd hold for cooling system, and is there any other place that has to be drained? The petcock was at what looks to be the lowest place on the cooling system.

If you would have use pure antifreeze instead of the 50/50 junk you would have not need to drain the block. I would rather buy a whole gallon of antifreeze than buy 1/2 gallon antifreeze and 1/2 gallon water at a store. Water is almost free from a hydrant on the side of the shop. Some people, without special needs, would buy breathing air at a store if it was for sale.

I didn't say I BOUGHT 50/50 mixed. I did use "pure antifreeze". I just mixed 1/2 gal water and 1/2 gal "pure" antifreeze, making a 50/50 mix, like all "pure antifreeze" containers suggest. The jug says that this will be good to 35 below. Surely you don't mean to put a nearly 100% antifreeze mix into a cooling system? Not sure what you mean by "have not need to drain the block". This unit hasn't had a flush since it was new, or at least not in the last 20 years. I fugure that if you're going to replace most of the coolant in a system, you might as well drain out ALL the OLD crap, flush it out, and put in all new.

Also need to drain the engine. Left side, forward of the carb- either a plug or petcock.
