My 1954 WD45 is stuck in 1st, is there a fairly easy fix?

NOT TO INSULT ANYONE BUT A VERY CLEAN AND RUST FREE SHIFTER ALWAYS HELPS WHEN IT IS APART CLEAN EVERYTHING AS GOOD AS YOU KNOW HOW AND INSTALL A GOOD BOOT FOLLOW THE OTHER GOOD INSTRUCTIONS TO PROCEED

THIS SAME THING HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON A NUMBER OF OCCATIONS. ON THING THAT HELPS IS TO PUSH THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER TO THE LEFT WHEN SHIFTING IN OR OUT OF 1ST OR 2ND GEAR. THIS HELPS HOLD IT IN THE CORRECT POSITION. ALSO WHEN SHIFTING IN OR OUT OF REVERSE PUSH THE LEVER TO THE RIGHT AS YOU SHIFT IT UP OF BACK IN OR OUT OF REVERSE. HOPE THIS HELPS. I ALSO HAVE TO TAKE MY GEAR SHIT LEVER OUT SOMETIMES TO GET THE TIP BACK IN THE CORRECT LOCATION.

When mine gets stuck in gear I pull the gear shift stick out of the hole,(there will be two washer like things underneath a snap ring, the snap ring may be a little tricky to get out, I just leave my snap ring out so if it ever gets stuck it can be fixed quickly and without a lot of hassle). Then take a screwdriver, you may want to use a large one or a big chisel, stick it down the hole, put it against the gear that's stuck and knock it back in neutral. Then put the stick back in and the washers, make sure you put the stick straight down between the gears so it will be in the neutral position. Hope this helps. Have a nice day.

Thanks for the help. Is the snap ring all that holds the shift lever in? The picture in my book isn't very clear.

I believe so. I think you will take the dust cover off, then pull the snap ring out and there is a retainer under it. This is according to my I&T shop manual. However I believe there was a retainer and a washer type thing in mine. Have a nice day.

I believe alot of people added a washer or two under the snap ring to add pressure so the gear shift lever wouldn't slip out of place.

Thanks, I'll try that next weekend, went to a local Allis store and got a new snap ring. Got lots of little things to do to the old tractor as it has been neglected for the past 10 years.
