I am currently restoring a WD and I am about to start sanding some paint off of the sheet metal. I have an orbital sander and I was wondering what sort of mask I should wear when sanding. Was the original paint lead based? What precautions should I take to not inhale the dust?

By all means wear a Respirator when doing any sanding of paint,Ventilation is of high importance. My experiance is all the Equipment paint I have used is Oil based of one sort or another and VOCs are the hazard with them. Paint with Lead as a ingrediant is mostly for Buildings,Interior and exterior, fences etc. Some people on the Cheap have painted Equipment with lead based paint but it is the exception in most cases.Lead based Paint "Chalks " greatly. To eliminate Sanding I use "StripEz" a lot.Orange based is good and is mostly hazard free.
