WD or WD-45 motor?

I believe I have a 1952 or 53 WD with a WD-45 block and maybe entire motor in it. How can I tell if the motor is from a WD-45 for sure? My father-in-law says that ALL WD motors had an inspection plate to view the pushrods and lifter area. My block does not have one. The shifter is straight like the WD and the serial is from a WD. The reason I need to know is that I have spark plugs for a WD in it and I know the WD-45 plugs are longer and think that may be part of my trouble with running rough and hard to start. It floods easy and may just need the carb adjust etc. At any rate I need to know if I have the right plugs in her. Thanks Douig

I've been around Allis's all my life and to my recolection WD's and WD45's all used the short spark plug's as did the first D-17's. The 2nd year D-17's were changed to a deeper head as the older one's would occasionally blow a plug out of the head with the shorter threads.

When I looked at WD and WD-45 spark plugs at NAPA the WD-45 plugs were very visibly longer and I wanted to make sure they would not hit the piston if I had them in the wrong motor. Thanks for everyones help.

My Dad had a 1953 WD that had curved shifter and no plate on engine. It must have been the last of the WD series before the WD45 designation.

WD engines have the cover on the right side and the WD45 doesn't have that cover. Either engine will bolt right up to either tranny/rear end. So it sounds like you have a WD tractor with a WD45 engine in it.

No plate=WD45 block. You can confirm that by looking at the engine SN, should be near the carb. Didn"t know there was as difference in spark plugs.

In addition to the lack of a side plate, if it's a WD-45 block (out of another tractor) the Serial Number should start with 45. WD block serial numbers begin with WD. ' course if it was a new replacement block, it may not even have a serial number. Later replacement blocks were all the newer WD-45 style and there is no guarantee that the innards (crank, rods and pistons) have the 226 cu. in. displacement (4-1/2" stroke).
