How can you tell the difference in a wd and a wd45?Does is say wd or wd45 in the serial number?

hi. back in the early 70's an old AC mechanic at Geneser Imp.,a long time AC dealer,in Granger Iowa told me when AC was bringing out the new WD45,the tractor was ready but the 45 engine wasn't ready. they used the WD45 transmission in the WD. the last WD's had the WD45 transmision with the curved shifter.

LOOK AT THE SERIAL # BY THE AIR CLEANER. WD STARTS WITH WD, WD45 STARTS WITH 45.
I HAVE A WD WITH A D17 BLOCK IN IT. TORE IT DOWN, HAS WD CRANK BOB

I've been around AC all my life and never heard the story Bill tells about WD having the WD45 engine before it was really called a WD45. As others have said the WD had the plate on the side of the engine and the WD45 did not. The last year of WD's did have the new transmission so you can't go strictly by shifter styles. You have to remember that these tractors are 50+ years old and may not still have original anything. Serial number is on rear end and transmission may have been swapped. So could the engine block. Even if the engine block hasn't been changed, you can bet something has been done inside. They may well have upgraded a WD block with WD45 crank and pistons, thousands have had that done.

Allis put the 226 cu in engine in the WD at about serial number 146607. They realized after some time went by that they had a significantly better tractor by doing that and decided to call it the "WD45". As far as I know, the first tractor to have WD45 on the hood was about serial number 160385. Allis made a lot of improvements to the tractor as time went by. Some of the improvements coincided with model years, some didn't. Some coincided with the change in designation , some didn't. That's the way Allis did business.

Hey Bill. All of my serial books (I have 3) say the first WD-45 was produced in 1953 with serial number 146607. I believe that they didn't put the decal on the hood with WD-45 until sometime later but the first WD-45 was in 1953 serial 146607.

Sorry I didn't see your post until just now. All of my books are packed away right now because my wife is having our house completely redone. So, I'm relying mostly on memory, but I think we're both saying about the same thing. Allis put the 226 engine under the WD hood at serial 146607 in response to farmers wanting more power. I remember that people called them "high headed WDs" due to the taller head on the engine. Marketing, or whoever, caught up with this and applied the WD45 moniker, probably at serial 160385. I remember this because we had a 49'WD (still do) and made regular visits to the AC dealer where these things were discussed.

I believe the "high head" came along somewhat before the 4 1/2" stroke, maybe about the time of the new transmission or before I think.

Bill, we had a WD also but don't know what year it was. Ours had the 4 1/8 cylinders so it had power nearly that of a 45. I checked all of my ads to see if I could find a WD-45 ad from from 1953 or 1954. Most of my ads don't have dates so it didn't help.

My collection now includes a 1953 WD-45 and a 1951 WD with 4 1/8 cylinders.

Interesting discussion. Hope we can get some more banter from others.

At least according to the info on this site the first WD45 was SN 146607.

As Old stated on the WD's there is a cover on the side of the engine it is on the right though.

The curved shifter is a fair indicator but the last WD's had that transmission also. WD's had a manifold with a metal plate.

I should add that the engine is not a perfect indicator as the gas power plants from all but the earliest WC's through the 170 will all drop in the same hole with little or no modification. It happens with some degree of regularity.

Seems like there are some more differences but they don't come to me right now. Check the archives. This subject comes up occasionally.

Most WDs have stright shifter and the WD45 has a curved shafter. Also the WD engine has a cover on the left side of the engine and the WD45 doesn't have a cover on the left side of the engine.

I think that cover is on the right side. Unless of course the battery is dead and you are hand cranking to start ;-)
