Just a warning. If you have the head done, in a year or so you will need to put new rings in. Why because engine wear the same top and bottom and if you fix up the top you will blow the bottom out sooner. Seen it to many time and had people come to me and ask what happen to there engine. I asked what they did and they told me they had the head done, I asked did you also do rings and they told me NO. I tell them well if you do the top you also need to do the bottom or its a waste of time and $$$.

What if you just lap the valves and seats in reply to old, 01-06-2006 08:08:52
with clover compound. Will you still have the same problems? Didi this on many Kohler and Onan engines and never had any troubles. I have a 350 Chevy and a 440 Chrysler that both need head work although nothing serious. Just wondering before I get started on them.

Well the reason you should always do both is because, if you only do the heads the compression goes up and the old rings can not handle that. It also works the other way as far as doing rings but not the head. Sometimes you luck out but most of the time it will come back and get you.

Guess you know what I'm talking about then. I know over the years I have had people try to sell me cars etc and they where proud to say that the head was just rebuilt and I always tell them no thanks I would pay half there price because of them haveing the head done but not the bottom end.

Aw shucks that ain`t too bad. Bet you still had plenty of power. While you got the head off, check it out and maybe grind the valves. She`ll be fine in a couple hundred dollars.
