i got a d17 series 1 and almost always needs ether to start cold. the owners manual says somthing about having a intake manifold preheater. however, it doesnt have one and theres a hole in the dash panel where a switch used to be. anyone know where to find a preheater or another solution to the problem? thanks

Welcome to owning a AC diesel. Most of the older ones start hard under 60 degrees. That's what the toolbox is for--your starting fluid. Only help I ever saw was rebuilding with the Totalseal kits, they fire up without starting fluid as low as 20 degrees. The preheaters worked OK if your batteries were charged up and held the heater for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes and hope it fired up in the first 10 seconds. If it isn't much of a problem you could put an electric block heater on it and just plug it in.

I have a D-17 Series 1 Diesel also. I installed glow plugs on it at one time as I always have to ether the tractor on a cold or warm day, also. The glow plugs never helped that much, so I just got used to using the ether. Always keep a can handy and it always works.
It is nice to know that I am not the only person to have this problem.

where did u put the glow plugs? i have a 59 series 1 with the 262 and it has a manifold heater
