WD starts but only runs a minute

Happy New Year to all. Best to you in 2006.

My 1950 WD is killing me. It fires and starts, but only runs for about a minute. At the minute mark it just sort of putters and stalls.

I think I have it narrowed down to a fuel problem. I recently replaced the carb (the original was shot - I got a replacement Zenith). I had it running fine for a bit - even did some chores. Now it's the symptoms I mentioned. I went back and looked at some other posts about similar problems. I took out the sediment bowl and screen and cleaned them. I took the carb off, cleaned it out with gumout, and blew it out with the compressor. I even tapped it with a hammer in case the float was stuck. I made sure I have good gas flow to the carb - which I do. I noticed that the carb fills with a lot of gas when I turn on the fuel (it actually leaks out a bit at the bottom).

Any suggestions? If my wife rolls her eyes at me one more time when I tell her that I've ALMOST got it figured out, I may jump off a building.

Thanks!

Had a tractor with the same problem but it ran for just a few minutes longer. Found out I had a small piece of rag or cloth in the fuel tank and when it came close to the outlet it would clog. Almost sold the tractor.

is that one of those chinese repop zeniths?...i havent heard anything good about them...sounds to me like the float needle isnt sealing and or the float level is set too high...top of float should be parallel with bottom of carb top.

if you got a warranty with carb and theres no rust in bowl you mite see about getting a replacement

This might sound crazy but have you run it with the gas cap off? If not give it a try. Sometimes they build up like a vapor lock and the gas just doesn't flow out. I had one that somoeone had put some gasket material in to make the cap fit tighter and it would run more than a minute or two. Took that stuff out and she run great.

Dont know if you have an in line fuel filter or not but I have seen times when the restriction is to great with the filter in line-If you have one try running it without the filter. Just another thought

Good Luck

Could be gas or spark. Next time it dies check for spark right then. If you have a good blue spark then look at the carb. If no spark or a yello spark replace the condenser. If its a carb problem right after it stops pull the plug from the bottom of the carb and check to see if you have a good flow of gas. I'd still bet its a spark problem becuase a carb full of gas will run about 3-5 minutes and a condenser going bad about 1-2 minutes.

Are you sure that you have spark? If your WD is still magneto fired, the symptoms are those of a bad coil or condenser.

Thanks for the input, fellas.

It's a 6 volt, positive ground, electric start. the coil is brand new (I recently replaced all the wiring, actually). I was getting good blue spark last time I checked, but I haven't checked that recently. I did notice that the plugs got fouled regularly. Could it be a bad cut-out or something else electrical? Bad rotor? I did not replace the cap and rotor nor any of the ingnition wires, but as I was getting good spark I didn't see the need as they appear to be in good shape.

First of all, chose a one story building.

Are you getting to much gas? It really sounds like not enough though. I would think it is still the needle valve sticking. Are you tapping it right after it stalls? It won't do any goodd to tap it when the bowl is full of fuel.
