Does anyone know if a 1957 D-14 gas with 12 volt generator, was pos or neg ground? I'm wondering if my brother might have switched cables when he put the batt back on after a recharge, because it has stopped charging, runs fine though. How much damage is done if things are switched? We have a WD(12 volt alternator)too that came without a battery and I've been wondering how to tell if it's pos or neg, if there is a way. I'm not really up on the differance and I'ld hate to burn anything up. Thanks again.

So would it hurt anything then to just switch back to pos on the battery and see if it charges? We always had to cross terminals on the regulator anyway to make it charge, but this time it didn't, that's what made me wonder about the grounding of the battery. The regulator might have finally conked out to I guess, I just don't want to fry anything, not knowing how sensitive the gen and reg are to being switched...thanks a lot for responding, I appreciate it, my dad kept all our old equipment running along all these years just by knowing all the workings so well, unfortunately now that he's gone I'm starting to realize how much I don't know.

Short answer, With a genny you can run it either way but, you need to have the coil hooked up the right way and polerize the genny for which ever way you hook it up.

Eric, you have a delemma. In 1957, the D-14 was supplied with a 6 volt positive ground system. To help with quicker starting, some owners switched to a 12 volt battery. Since you know that you have a 12 volt battery, this clearly happened to your tractor. Your delemma is that you do not know if the generator was changed. A few industrious owners will spend the money to find a 12 volt generator and a 12 volt regulator so that the tractor looks stock. But 99% will opt to pull the old generator and put in a alternator. The odds are that your generator is the original 6 volt generator. Some of these generators can be made to charge a 12 volt battery by increasing the spring tension on the regulator coils. If you try to do this, you can maintain the positive ground but will need to polarize the generator again. Since this is involved and helps to have experience, you may elect to buy a used alternator from the local junk yard. If you do this, pick one with an internal regulator - it is simpler to install.

All Allis equipment were positive ground until they started using alternators. My mid 60's C-II was until I put an alternator on the combind. Kent

My D15 is pos ground. Some one will come up with the for sure answer on the D 14, after you make sure it is hooked up right, before starting to look at removing stuff, I would repolarize the gen just for grins. It won't hurt anything and that saved my bacone a while back.
