Need Help!
My 12V generator is beyond repair. I purchased a Green generator (john deere) that man told me will fit my D17. It took the pully from my old gen just fine and mounted to my tractor just fine. prior to starting the tractor I noticed a tag on the gen that said 24 volts. My system is 12 volt pos ground. The generator has 4 lugs, F and A lugs on top and two more on bottom. Bottom lugs have a jumper wire between them. The man I purchased it from said not to remove the jumper. I flashed the gen from arm terminal to battery. I started the tractor but with a DC volt meter attached to the battery I am not showing a charge even with engine revved up and the battery discharged to 10 volts.

Question: does anyone know if this 24v marked gen should work? How can I determine if the problem is in the generator or regulator?
Does anyone have wire diagram for series III showing generator and regulator wireing. Thanks for any help provided.

on any generator there should be a F and A terminal. to test the generator, ground the F terminal to the tractor frame. start the tractor and measure the voltage across the A and F terminals ( a is not connected to the voltage regulator now). you should get over 20 volts on a 12 volt generator once you get above 1000 RPM. if no voltage, then generator is bad. if you get voltage, then you regulator is stuck.

Steve
Thanks for info. I'll try this in AM. Does the wires from the regulator remain connected to gen during this test?

Let's see if I can get this link to work...

It should show an Electrical Schematic for D17SerIII gas.
