wd shifter straight vs. curved

Hello guys, i was reading in the archives that toward the end of the last year of wd's the shifter was curved, however my wd i just bought last week at an auction is curved and the serial number is 58569 and makes it a 1950 i belive according to a website. how can this be...did someone convert this because they broke the orginal. thanks in advance and learning about ac for life now.

A wd-45 has wd in front of the serial# I have a 1954 model

Transmission was changed to constant mesh (curved shifter) at serial number 127008 in 1952. Your WD has been apart and modified. The curved shifter does not simply drop on to the older sliding gear transmission. Shifter handles have been bent too.

Butch and allis list. thats the best explination yet. i got this tractor from the original owner and the WD has about 95% original paint. i can't see any indication of tractor being apart ever but that does not mean it was not, must have been just after it was sold. i'am going to ask him and see if he remembers if there were a bulletin out in those days about that update (or maybe you know) on the WD...anyway, now i know what to look for in buying the so called better WD tractor. i have a few more questions on the tractor but will wait a few days as i do not want to be a list hog... i appreciate all the info you fellows have give me and i will to someday return the favor to the young and old.

A 50+ year old tractor that has never been apart isn"t very realistic in my opinion. I grew up in the time of the WD"s and they were the workhorse of most farms in the area. They were tough but farmers used them hard and they needed repair. I remember our well cared for tractors going to the shop for overhaul and repairs after about 8-10 years.

I have both straight and curved shift levers, and they are not the same length, should not interchange. 127008 (1952)should be when the constant mesh tranny was used, like WD45. Check if there is a '1' in front of your serial number, that would make it a WD45. The tranny is part of the rear end, with the stamped serial number, but maybe the internal gears can be changed----I don't know.

thanks for the info, i just went out to check to see if a #1 was in front of the "WD" but it was not, but then if it was i would have had a serial number of a WD45 and WD (58569) correct.
