Clyde, do you have a generator or an alternator. alternator is boxy and aluminum. it has a BAT terminal on the back, and few spade terminals on side or back. generator is longer and made of steel. has two terminals or studs on it, ALT and Field.?????

First, WHAT alternator are you using? If you a using a internal regulated Delco with three terminals two of which are in the back edge of the alternator you need to wire as follows: Terminal marked Bat. should go to the POSITIVE side of the battery. The next terminal to the right should go to a SWITCHED 12 volt source through a doide with the band on the diode toward the switch. This would be switched by the ignition switch. If you do not use the diode the tractor WILL NOT shut-off with the ignition switch as the ignition will be back feed from the alternator. The next terminal to the right needs to go to a UNSWITCHED 12 volt source. Most people connect this to the battery terminal on the alternator but this discounts the voltage drop in the wire to the battery during charging. You need to use a seperate wire which is connected to the POSITVE post of the battery.
