How do I remove steering wheel from my Allis Chalmers C?

Rather than banging on the steering wheel with a hammer, I'd put a block of wood against it and pound on that. Less likely to damage the wheel.

Remove the acorn nut from the end of the shaft. Essentially, the steering wheel should pull off of the shaft, however, if it's been on there for many years, it may take a little encouragement from a hammer. Tap on the backside of the wheel, on the spokes near the hub, alternating spokes until it finally breaks free. Squirting in a little PB Blaster or WD-40 might help also. Once removed, you should see that it's a plain shaft with a key in a slot. Watch that the key doesn't fall and "disappear".

Some people speak of heating it, then tapping it, but I've never had to heat up a steering wheel to remove it.

Thanks. That is what I have been doing, just making sure thats how to do it. Do have another question. If I am restoring this tractor, should I put the magneto on or leave it with the distributor - it had been converted. Also, will the magneto cause any problems?
