I have converted my 6 v system to 12 volt. now want to add an alternator with a single wire to the battery. Has anyone else done this and do you have any suggestions where to order the parts. any help would be appreciated.

This thread worries me. I have used a one wire system for years (on Jeep Wrangler) and like it so much I figured I would never go back to a 3 wire. All you have to do is momentarily hit 1000 rpm to exite the thing and back off to idle. The thing is a 105 amp unit. Surely my AC B will reach 1000 rpm??....I mean I don't know, but it sure sounds like it should. What is the rated HP RPM for a B? Thanx much, Chuck

When people post speeds at which a one-wire alternator will excite, I think there is some confusion over whether the speed referred to is alternator speed, or engine speed.

Obviously, alternator speed is what matters.

Often, the crankshaft pulley on an old tractor is not as large as the pulley on a typical V-8 car engine the alternators were designed for, and the alternator ends up running much slower than on the car where it was original equipment.

Likely, no problem with a 3-wire unit, but MAY be a problem with a "one-wire" unit.

Did you take a look at Bob M's diagrams, to see how easy it is to do it the right way?

Also, for more alternator tech info, take a cruise around the MAD electrical site linked below. It's hot-rod oriented, but the alternator tech applies ti old tractors, as well.

As the guys mentioned, a 3 wire Alternator configuration is much better than a one wire design on a tractor. Some folks have used a one wire with success, but there are a few downfalls with the one wire. One is rpm. Most one wire Alt's need between 1200-1400 rpm or more to "excite" the regulator to start the charging process. On smaller engines like your B is equipped with, those rpms aren't reached quite easily. The bigger engines will, but this is where problem two comes in. Unless your tractor is a working tractor where you will be using it for a longer periods of time, the battery will never get it's full charge from the Alternator if you do short trips or small chores, parades etc, shutting the engine on and off. Eventually, the battery reserve drops and you'll have to recharge the battery with a charger because the Alternator will never get the change to put back full reserve into the battery. A three wire Alternator will immediately start charging the battery as soon as you start the tractor, and a possible charging problem quickly is eliminated. The battery stays full, and if your B is equipped with a Distributor fired Ignition system, will always have full power to the Ignition circuit for a good running engine. A mag fired engine doesn't need power from the battery to supply spark, but the charging problem still exists. If you need any help, information, parts, or wiring systems drop us a line. Be glad to help you out...

Put a one wire alternator on my B years ago. Could never get it to spin fast enough to work. Replaced with a 3 wire alternator and have never had a problem since.

davilla,

Bob Melville, over on the Farmall board, has drawn up and posted a series of wiring diagrams to convert IH tractors to 12 Volt systems, with alternators.

I've linked his diagrams below.

Whether you have a distributor, or a mag, there will be a diagram that will work for your Allis.

Be smart, use a standard, as-original 3-wire alternator.

They are the cheapest to buy, the easiest to find, charge at lower RPM's, and cause less parasitic drain on the battery during periods of non-use than the deceptively simple "one-wire" units.

I dont have the sources but they are readily available. If you want to use a true "One Wire" Alternator, their output simply feeds the hot ungrounded battery post which is usually via and through the ammeter if it uses one. Most alternators amperage requires to upgrade the charging system wiring to 10 Gauge from the alternator to the ammeter and from the ammeter to the battery. Most alternators are for Negative ground so you you would need to convert to that if you havent already. Any ground swap requires the ammeter leads to be reversed so it wont read backwards and if its a coil ignition the coil should match the ground, i.e. - to distributor for Negative ground or + to distributor for positive ground. A lot of people use the GM 10SI 3 wire alternator cuz they are so cheap and available but it requires a bit more wiring configuration.

You will be better off useing a Delco 10SI 3 wire one. One wire types need to many RPM to get the chargeing then a B will do.
