I recently bought a so-called service manual from E-bay and would you believe it doesn't mention any timing marks?? Where is the timing mark to be found? I have the timing procedure (from this forum) but do not know where the mark is.It is a '39 hand crank.

look thru the 1 inch hole. listen for the mag to SNAP when you are at the TDC mark. when running it will advance to the fire mark.

I have found two that did not have timing marks at all. Both were crank starts without the ring gear. I have never found a flywheel that had the ring gear without timing marks. I have seen both a line with (center) stamped below a line and TDC stamped below the line.

I believe there is 2 marks one is the FIRE mark and one is the CENTER mark I have a CA and that is the way it is , Jay

To add to what Steve said, you may need to spray carb clearer etc in there to see the marks.

There's a hole, about an inch wide, on the left side of the clutch housing, where you can see the side of the flywheel. The mark is a straight horizontal line with the word FIRE above it.
