Allis B or C?

My son and I are restoring a Allis Chalmers. When I bought it I was told it was a C. While we were cleaning it, we found some numbers and a large B stamped on the top of the rear end on the left side under the seat. What does this mean and how can I identify tractor so I know exactly what I have?

Here is a picture of my Allis C, as you can see the pitman arm is facing up, where as the Allis B pitman arm will be facing down and steering link will be below the generator.HTH

a B is about 5 ft wide outside the rear wheels, and steering gear box arm (below gas tank) points down, with rod goes to the left front wheel.---- C is closer to 6 feet wide at the rear. gear box for steering has arm striaght up, and rod goes to another gear box under raidator.

the steering rod goes to the front of the tractor on the left side and has only one gear box. The tractor number is in front of the gear shift and it starts with a C I think. The rear end is 5 foot wide. Like i said though, there is a B stamped on the transmission under the seat. If it is a C, would it be a 1949? If it is a B, what year would it be? I am confused.....

i live an hour west of the capitol, springfield Illinois. THE B and C are based on the same tractor. same radiator, motorn torque tube, transmision, gas tank, sheetmetal, and tires.--- the B has 6 inch narrower axle on each side so a foot narrower. THe B rear hubs normally press onto the splined hub shaft and retain with a 2 inch nut. ALL B tractors are wide front end, most are a wishbone corve, some are straight adjustble beam. Like i said, the B has the steering arm straight down and the rod goes to the left front kink pin on wheel.--- THe C is a two bottom tractor, so normally a narrow front end, but not always. It has wider rear axle and a pediston mount under the radiator so the steering rod goes to this ara and makes it steer. THey use the same hydraulics and pto units. You can mix and match parts so its hard to say exactly what it is sometimes. THE serial number is by the shift lever stamped in the case. The B on the axle means nothing, not factory stamp. send me a note if you need photos. [email protected] will be away for a few days.

The serial number should be on the left hand side of the shifter on I think the bell tube. If it starts with a B then its a B if it starts with a C then its a C. It also could be a Mutt, meaning its part B and part C.

Hi Tod. If it's a narrow front end, it's most likely a C. If it's wide, then it's probably a B...BUT both are interchangable and have been known to have been switched from time to time, but it's likely yours hasn't been. Neat little tractors!

Any suggestions for restoration? One thing I was contemplating is whether or not to put the magneto back on or leave it 12 volt with the distributor and all. Are there restoration guides out there? What do you think?

Tod, there's a great little book out there penned by a guy in the U.K. who restored a B. He has some really good pictures and suggestions in it. I got mine from e-bay (type in Allis B and lots of stuff will pop up).
Between the book and the people on this forum I've tackled MANY projects with my B and have had a good time doing it. If you ever need any pictures of anything in particular, ask and I'll take some for you. Helps sometimes. I know it isn't original, but I enjoy the ease of the 3 pt. that's on our B....really makes snow removal and other stuff here in Michigan easy!

I found out that the tractor is a B. I talked to the guy I bought it from 10 years ago. I always thought it was a C but it is a B. He told me that the engine is not original though. It also has a narrow front end. Should I put a wide on it? If so, where could I find one?
Tractor number is: B81579. If I read the charts right, it would be a 1948.
