D17 Brakes?

I am going to be doing a brake job on my D17 and am looking for advice. My manuals discuss adjustment, but I think I'm beyond that. Inspection shows three of the return springs are broken and I can feel scoring on the left drum. What is required for taking it down to really get a look at what is going on in there? thanks

If all you need to do is replace the lining, the job might not be too hard. Take off the top inspection plates on top of the axle. remove the springs( if any is left), unscrew the brake rod that runs to the pedals. Take the bolt and retaining clip at the bottom of the axle. The pin that the clip is holding has to come out. As you can see, there is a ring around it that you can try to pry it, use vice grips on it or whatever. If it definitily will not come, you can cut the center out of the pin with a torch up through the bottom hole, then knock the outer piece into and out the middle. The other piece should come out easier. Then work the brake shoes up out the top square hole. Then replace the lining and reinstall. If the drum has to be replaced, the axle housing will have to be removed to get at the drum. You will need a big hammer to pound it back on the axle. Good luck, it sounds harder that it really is. To get a really good view of the brake and drum, you should be able to remove the rear axles at the differential housing. I have done this on a WD, but I am not sure about a D17.
