Loose Front End Model C

I have a Model C with a very loose wabblly Tricycle front end. Everything appears to be tight from the steering wheel thru the stearing box all the way to the front of the tractor. i can move the front tires side to side over a 1" either direction before any of the linkage moves.

What should be the next thing i am looking for to tighten up the front end?

Side to side ? will they go oposit ways or dous the one tire move with the other if they dont sounds like you mite want to check the wheel bearings

I have already replaced the wheel bearings. When I replaced them the old ones seemed to be in good condition yet.

Now for the bad news. These do wear out to the point that the slop can't be taken out. I'm doing the same thing on my C. You could try taking the top gear off and put it on after turning it 180 degrees. I did this and got improvement. That side of the gear should have new teeth on it. If it is still sloppy, it means the sector is worn out. You could replace the sector ( with the gear turned 180 degrees) and make it like new. Always adjust the shims until you get smooth turning (but the minimum shims).

pull the 4 bolts out of the front bolster and remove 1 or more of the spacers between it and the front casting. also check the segment gear on the shaft, they wear and get loose over time.

Which shims the shims above the bevel gear or the pedestal shim itself? When i removed the pesestal the first time is didn't even have a gasket between the pesestal and the front casting.

Any other ideas?

How can i tell what a good segment gear and bevel gear should look like? lol! If i were to replace these.

dig on the edge of the bolster and the front housing to find the shims, mine looked like part of the front casting till i got my knife in there and pulled them off, over the years of paint/grease i couldnt see them either.
if you have to, pull the shaft out of the bolster and run a small bead of weld on the spline, grind it down and put it back together, and drive the gear back on the splines.

If the shims have already been removed you can add shims under the beveled gear to lift it up and make it tighter.
