wc pressed steel rearend

looked at a wc with pressed steel rearend and it has a lever with a cover between torque tube coupling and rear end. has a 2x4 inch cover on top of torque tube and 15 or 16 inch lever on left side. what is that and what does it do.

The lever disengages the rearend. It was used mainly with the front cultivators and the lift system which mounted where the cover is. It required the output shaft from the transmission to be turning....if you stopped at the end of a row before getting the cultivator lifted you could disengage the rearend and lift without moving.

And for lifting the cultivator before the tractor got really stuck in the mud..... .Dad used it with the Roto-Baler because it was quicker to stop and restart than using the shift lever when discharging the bale.
