Gary, I used a Mitsubishi alternator on my Allis C was small enough that I had lots of clearance from the steering. Model I use is self exciting. they are easy to wire up. The "L" terminal on the back of the Jap. alternators is the charge indicator (lamp), excite wire (field), the other one will be labeled v,or R it hooks to the battery output terminal on back of alternator..

If you need a picture of alternator mounted on C let me know.

Keith

Hi Gary,

I prefer the 3 wire version. I am told that the one-wire model requires a higher speed in order to begin charging. The speed is going to be low anyway on the B & C if you reuse the standard generator pulley. It's really not that much more difficult to wire up the three wire version - plus I think they are significantly cheaper to purchase. You should be able to get a rebuilt Delco10SI 3 wire for about $50 with no core to return for a core credit. The issue with the C and the 10SI is clearance with the steering linkage. That's not a problem with the B. You might want to investigate the smaller bodied 130CS that Steve(ill) mentioned in his post. That is likely more expensive than the 10SI but may be a better choice. I don't know if the wiring for that is identical to the 10SI. You can see how I did my '42B 3-wire unit (including wiring) here.

I have two batteries for a mag tractor with no generator or alternator. I just keep one charged to change out the one in the tractor when it runs down. I'm amazed at how long I can run one battery.

run bot my B tractors on 12 volts for years. the one has a 12 volt generator and looks original. the other has a 130CS delco alternator and is a very nice fit.

I"ll bet well over half of the 6 volt starters in the world are running very happily on 12 volts. I wouldn"t try a 12 volt starter on 6 volts tho..... it would have to double the current for the same power (power = voltage x current) and it is current that fries things. Chuck

while you are buying a new starter you might as well buy two more so that when you burn up the one on the tractor running 12 volts thru a 6 volt starter, you will have a extra one. 12 volt will melt the windings and the rest of the starter. just get off your lazy backside and clean all of the connections good and put 00 cables and a 6 volt battery and the tractor will start when every you want it too.

I agree with the others. Many of us have 12v converted tractors with the 6v starter. They do work fine unless you crank on em excessively.

Sorry I can't agree with what you said about 12 volts on a 6 volt starter. I have 15 running tractors and most of them have 6 volt starter and they have 12 volt batterys. I have never melted anything on those starters. Also I know there 1000s of tractors out there with 12 volt systems but with 6 volt starters on them and they have been that way for decades so you are just plain wrong about 6 volt starters and 12 volt batterys.

You really need to learn some table manners. Calling him lazy was inappropriate and childish. You are welcome to your opinion but you are just plain wrong. I've used 12v batteries on 6v starters in two different applications for years with no problems whatsoever. If you've burned up any starters with that configuration, you were not using them properly - which is not surprising given your arrogance.

The 6 volt starter will work fine. You can use either an alternator or generator depending if you want to keep the look original or not. The alternators are much more problem free than the old generators.

Yep you can use a 12 volt battery on a 6 volt starter just don't hold the starter button for more then about 30 sec to a minute.

The 6 volt starter on my 41 C has had a 12 volt battery on it since I purchased it 20 years ago. It is used many times a week. I myself have never had any problems with starting it or burning up the starter due to using 12 volts. I charge the battery with a marine trickle charger after I finish useing it. I have been at auctions before and watched 36 volts being used to crank equipment with 24 volt systems and never saw any problems while I was watching it being done.

thanx texas, the starters in the mail someware between mo and mi. cant wait til it gets here. seems if its tuned right it shouldn't take much to start. especially with a good battery. i like that trickle charge thing. been seeing alot of people using these. it does help to have a warm battery in the winter or really all the time. gary
