Stupid question. Which way does handle on hand crank spin? facing front of tractor clockwise or counterclockwise?

ihand cranked my c for a few times this winter (it really wasnt her fault for not starting)anyways i cranked and i cranked and cranked a little more. the only concluion i could come up with was to buy da.. starter. heck with that cranking, unless your bound and determined to stay orginal. lol. gary

You are the apparent Person who posted all the Pic's of a possible WC purchase and it is quite obvius you have tried to turn it over with a Crank and are having problems ,pay attention to "Old" and the other Posters Comments. Good Luck with your Tractor.

There set up so you can only turn them the correct way for starting your engine. Other wise when it started it would brake you arm, flip you around and maybe even kill you. Push the rod in and you will quickly find out what I'm talking about because it will push back on you if you turn it the wrong way and if you turn it the right way it will turn the engine over. Also never ever hook your thumb around the hand crank handle because if it kicks back it can and will brake your thumb and or your arm. Been there done that and payed the price. And even then it can still get you if your not careful

Thats ok, only reason I ever say anything is because if you post it wrong the guy that needs to answer doesn't get the e-mail so he may or may not see the answer you give him. Other wise it doesn't matter to me. I'd really hate to see what would happen to some one if they had a hand crank that would turn the engine over either way. Almost bet he would only start that engine once and then maybe never be able to start any engine ever again.

If your hand crank will turn the crankshaft of the engine either way, DO NOT USE IT!!! It can break your arm or worse. What do you think will happen when the engine STARTS? The crank handle and associated shaft connecting it to the crankshaft of the engine must have a "rachet" or "coupling" which disengages when the crankshaft turns faster than the crank handle. Check the front end of your engine crankshaft and the crankshaft pulley. You should find a "pin and cam/notch" type coupling that will disengage when the crankshaft turns faster than the crank AND will disengage when you turn the crank handle "backwards". Sometimes the coupling is stuck and/or rusted in the engaged position. If so, break it loose, clean and grease it so that it will disengage reliably. Be careful, good luck. Also be sure the engine is timed correctly and that the magneto impulse coupling (or Distributor timing) is set PROPERLY. I hand crank my WC all the time and have never had a problem with backfires, kicking, or sticking with the WELL GREASED coupling on the crankshaft pulley.

HAND CRANK IS ONLY A BAR WITH A PIN CROSSWISE IN THE END OF IT, IF IT WILL TURN THE CRANKSHAFT BOTH WAYS THEN LOOK AT THE PULLEY THAT THE CRANK ENGAGES. IT SHOULD BE STAIGHT ON ONE SIDE AND TAPERED ON THE OTHER WHERE THE CRANK ENGAGES. THE TAPER ALOWS THE CRANK TO DISENGAGE WHEN THE TRACTOR STARTS. DON'T GET HURT!!! BOB
