WILL A BAD REAR SEAL ON A WD45 ENGINE CAUSE THE OIL PRESSURE TO GO LOW? THE SEAL FAILED WHILE MOWING OR THE REAR MAIN WENT REAL QUICK. IT WAS LEAKING A LITTLE BEFORE AND NOW LEAKS ALOT! HAS ANYONE HAD A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE?

Roger: If the low oil pressure and the bad leak happened at the same time, I would be willing to bet that the rear main seal is not your problem. On the rear of the engine block there is an expansion plug (commonly referred to as a freeze plug) that seals the rear of the camshaft. Since the camshaft has the main oil passage for the engine, a large leak at this plug will definitely affect the oil pressure at the same time. Remove the engine and inspect this plug. I think that this is where you will find your problem. I hope that this helps.

The normal progression is: Bearings wear, causing low oil pressure and wearing of the seal which causes the leak. I recently purchased a WD-45 which had very poor oil pressure when warmed up. I, too have been using it for mowing. I dumped in a couple of bottles of STP which helped the oil pressure some (mostly when engine is cold) but after a few hours the rear seal started leaking so bad it's leaving a trail and a big puddle after she is parked. Unfortunately, you, like me, will probably wind up pulling the engine, having the crank reground and installing undersized bearings. There just ain't no miracle cure for worn out bearings and rings, no matter what the labels on all those cans say!!! Good luck, Brian G.

On some AC tractors the oil pressure drops as the oil heats up it becomes "thinner" and flows with less pressure. Also if your oil pressure gauge is an after market gauge it will read low compared to an AC gauge. My guess is that you'ld have to be losing quarts of oil to notice a pressure drop from a leaky seal.
