In my experience most are cat 1. The difference would be the pin size. Cat 1 pins are 7/8" while cat 2 are 1&1/8" according to the chart at left.
I always thought of cat 1 as up to 50 hp, cat 2 as 50-100 hp and cat 3 100+ hp. The WD and WD45"s ought to stick to cat 1 equipment because of it"s weight making the front lite and the hp needed to pull it. I think almost all cat 1 arms will swing wide enough to accept the extra width of the cat 2 hitch, if the lift pins would fit. Some ball have holes for both size pins and it is sure easier to use adapters on cat 1 pins in cat 2 hitches than to try and do something to go the other way. The difference between a WD and a WD45 engine block, is that the WD block has a large removable plate on the side of the block and the WD45 block does not have the plate. After 50 years, there is no telling what kind of crank and pistons you have inside the block. Many WD"s have been upgraded with WD45 parts. WD45"s all used curved shifters while only the last year of WD production use the curved shifters, the rest were straight. Would not be all that uncommon to find a tractor made up of engine, transmission and rearend from a WC, WD and WD45. In 50+ years lots of things happen. NEVER go by decals on a tractor, you will get burned bad if you don"t know any other way to tell the difference.

Thanks for the replies. How can I tell if my WD45 is a Category 1 or 2?

Allis Chalmers WD 45 is factory equipped with Snap Coupler Hitch which is not a true 3 Point, however most after Market Adapted 3 Point Hitches are called Catagory 2 for this Tractor.I could tell you several Horror Stories of an WD45 with 3 Point Mtd.Equip. I much prefer the Snap Coupler Hitch, especially for Mounted Tillage Tools.

The Factory 3 PH adaptor is Cat #2. I would suspect most after market are also Cat #2.
