My Dad just gave the 1st brand new tractor to ever hit our farm, 1949 WD. I want to restore it and let Dad head to the plow days and be proud. Any advice on where to start would be appreciated. The ol girl runs like a top but spits a little oil and needs a fresh coat of make up...There was a major overhaul in the early 60's. I just want to do it right and need the help of someone that has been down this road. Thanks in advance.

Sorry but I have another question... The decal set.? The tractor has the long A and S but should they be Blue or Black? I have looked thru many sites and am confused...Which is correct for the 49 WD? Or is it a preference thing...?

Get your decals from Lyle Whacker. Have your serial number handy. You will not only get the best quality but correct decals for your year. I belive a 49 is blue with long A and S.

I've had very good luck with buying manuals from this web site - ytmag.com. For parts, I got most of mine (for a '54 WD-45 wide front) thru Sandy Lake Implement in Sandy Lake, PA (724) 376-2489. Brenda in Parts is VERY helpful, and Bill in Service has lots of experience with these tractors.

Good Luck!

"doing it right" means different things to different people. For me it usualy means I cant find a point to quit tearing down. Did Our 49WD 2 years ago, this one was down to the point that the entire tractor save rear tires and wheels was stacked on shelves. The end result of such work is very satisfying. We use the WD and everything operates as new from the steering to the brakes to the seat and pedals having no slop to the motor being overhauled. Lots of people get burried in these projects and quit, others are dissatisfied with the results because of shortcuts. My advise to you is to do nothing until you decide exactly what you want to end up with. Then if a partial restoration is in the cards operate the tractor long enough to wtrite down everthing that you want to fix and get a budget for it.

Thanks Butch...I have sat on that tractor since the time I was big enough to climb to the seat. "Right" to me means as colse to factory fresh as possible...I realize that I will probably have more invested than it"s worth... but I really struggle to put a dollar value on that tractor. In time it will be passed to my son, he is 14 and more "tractor nuts" than Dad. I am probably going down to the bare frame rails and build up from there...I envision a "New" 1949.? I will post a picture of "Before" very soon so you can see what I am dealing with. The 49 is complete down to the bullet shaped tail light with the original red glass. The fenders will need replacing as they have serious holes where they mount. Basically, it"s a tractor that has been in use since 1949 (feeding cattle and pulling hay racks is the definition of current use) with no cosmetic tune ups, but it hasn"t been abused either.

Do you have a perfered supplier for parts? is there anyone to stay away from? I am planning on spending December thru end of Feb on the project and not rushing it...I really want to target "NEW" for the completed project.

Thanks again
