As some of ya may know, Im a newbie to the world of AC and Orange even though Im a decent hand at electricity, and have got some great help here from Texas Denny n others which I appreciate, and Im still in the "learning curve" for example: A few weeks back I wanted to change my hydraulic fluid n saw the manual recommended 10W for really cold temps n 20W otherwise. Buttttt t never being much of a hand at reading directions (I always tell the first wife Real Men dont read directions lol) I happened to have some 30W Universal Hydraulic fluid around so I used that. GO FIGURE the one day it was a lil cold, YEP you guessed it, my lift n bucket raised as slow in Mollasses in January. I knew heavier oil was slowwwww ww in cold, but didnt expect it thattttt t slow when it wanst all that colddddd ddd yet.

Anywho, an old buddy of mine who has been an AC man for years happens by n horse laughs me saying I should really be using lighter 10 or 20 W oil (I knew that DUH) suitable for AC 182 (or something like that). Sooooo o Im down at Orscheln Farm Supply last night n pick up some 10W 20 Hydraulic Fluid labeled right on it as suitable for AC 182. Today I used n and you guessed it again, she works much fasterrrrr rr.

Then I says to my buddy "You know theres one other problem and I start to point towards the gear shift" HE INTERRUPTS ME BEFORE I SAY ANOTHER WORD and says "It jumps out of third gear dont it" He said that seemingly small amount of throw the shifter moves into third gear was like that when new and that happens. Texas Denny has already instructed me on this topic and next spring Im gonna drain the oil n remove the side plate n inspect the shifter forks etc.

I had the carb adjusted (when it was still warm) where it starts n idles n runs perfect n smooth n sweet. I dont ever run my carbs any richer then absolutely necessary to avoid black smoke and the resultant blacking n carbon fouling the plugs. But the first cold days she was cold natured as a witches *** so today I set my load n idle settings just a tad richer n that seeemd to help.

I still like the old girl and like my buddy said, just dont use 3rd gear, and 2nd is fine for moving bales and brush hogging, but it looks like raking hay is definitely more of a 3rd gear thing, so I will deal with that issue come spring.

Take care yall, John T, a JD man buttttt tt like my lil D 15 also.

John do you have a problem keeping the loader up when you use the 3 point on other tools? I just got a D-15 s.2 not to long ago and I`m finding a lot of little problems, like the power director dont work in low side, drop the snow plow and the loader goes down, and I have not got the alternator put on yet. I most times pick up the D-14 and D-15s to use the motors in the Bs & Cs. thats easier than fixing the third gear thing. but this one has a good third gear.

I have the same problem with my D14 and my solution was to put a 2 outlet selector valve in at the end of the hyd. line before the outlets for the lift and hyd. coupler. that way I can select which side of the valve I want for the loader or the snap coupler(3-pt.hitch). Hope this helps you. Dave

John, I'm glad I'm not alone in the new "land of the orange". The kid and I will be working on his tractor this evening...

Your Correct in reply to John T, 11-22-2005 12:37:25

I posted below that it would use 30 wt oil and should have said 20 wt. 10 wt would not hurt in cold weather.
My Symplisity 9523 takes 30 wt oil for every thing.

Nice to hear your progress> wish we were a little closer geographically so I could come and see you/it.

My D-14 is a similar engine to your D-15. In the manual, it clearly states that you should not run the tractor at low idle for sustained peiods. I tried it (not purposely) shortly after I got it (working on a fence) and sure enough, it started to miss. Pulled the plugs and they had that rich looking black stuff - not the oily stuff. Cleaned plugs and haven't had a problem since. Now I make sure it is at 1000 if I have to let it sit for any time. I don't think you can avoid the black problem by leaning the carb out - would have too many undesireable side effects (Like being a cold runner).

JOHN: MAYBE A SMALL PIECE OF CARDBOARD OVER PART OF THE RADIATOR WOULD HELP HER WARM UP. JUST ADJUST IT TO SIZE NEEDED. THOSE INDIANA WINTERS CAN BE ROUGH CAN'T THEY? SEVERAL OILS WILL WORK IN THE HYDRAULICS. LOOKS LIKE YOU FOUND ONE.
