I have a Allis B-1 with a Briggs 19 eng with a Magna-Matic ingnition system. The points and actuating system are wore out. Is there any way to convert over to a electronic system? I tried a universal "atom" but these only last a short time and usually the engine starts backfiring and blows out the head gasket. Any ideas please?

I forgot to mention that I was contacted by the person who oversees the B&S page on YAHOO. He later contacted me to tell me GEM had give him pemission to post this artical on their pages. So you might check the B&S section of YAHOO. I do not have a link as I DO NOT YAHOO.

The later B&S Magnetron WILL NOT wotk on this engine. The coil on a B&S Model 19 is under the flywheel. These coils, P/N 290880 will go bad. When they go bad the engine will run at idle but as you throttle up the engine will start running poorly. A new coil from B&S is over $100.00. Check out the November 2005 issue of GAS ENGINE MAGAZINE for my modification of a later B&S point type coil to fix your model 19. If you are a good parts scrounger you can find the coil to be modified on a junk push mower engine. This will let you fix your model 19 for little or no cash outlay.

a later briggs electronic coil should bolt right on where existing coil does now and it uses magnets on flywheel for timing...just set air gap to .010 and yer good to go...only wire ya need to hook up is kill wire...throw points n condensor away
