I'm coming along slowly on my D17 project, but I am making progrss. I am having trouble finding the correct fitting thermstat so back to napa. Twisted bolts off getting it out but with a hot wrench i have them out now. I'm still looking for a grill on e-bay (Denny) But I have time. I beleive in cleaning the inside of a system out and wondered that if I cleaned this radiator and block out how many leaks I will create. It is really limed up from what I have seen.

I've only had a radiator flush cause problems once. That was on a car that had an aluminum radiator and enough stop leak to stop the flow in the hoses. When flushed three holes about .060" each appeared with splendid waterfalls on the fan. Apparently punched by a careless amateur mechanic, he simply filled it with stop leak until it did stop leaking. I rebuilt the radiator.

My guess is that a flush could do you nothing but good. If there is an unseen problem caused by stop leak, it needs to be addressed for the engines sake. It's hard to get that block clean if it has been filled with stop leak. The stuff just collects and stays at the bottom of the block. I sure would do it. I wouldn't expect any leaks. In the block, the only place a leak might start is on the cylinder seals at the bottom. I don't think stop leak does any good on these leaks so a flush shouldn't increase risk. Since the radiator is copper, if you get a leak, you can repair it with solder and a small torch.

TKS, I WAS GOING TO DO IT ANYWAY BUT NEEDED SOME POSITIVE FEEDBACK. I'M WILLING TO FIX ANY PROBLEMS. REALLY ENJOYING MY SPARE TIME (WHAT THERE IS OF IT) PLAYING IN THE SHOP. JIM

i've had pretty good luck using 5% white vinegar to clean limescale out...fill it up plum full of vinegar and run it at operating temp for about 30-45 minutes then flush it out with clean water...you can put some baking soda in to neutralize vinegar but i never had any problems with it eating radiator like some of the commercial flushes.

there useta be a 10% vinegar that worked better if you can find it...mite take a couple times to get it all with 5% but gallon for gallon it costs about same as commercial flushes...only real bad side effect is neighbors will think ya makin pickles and come runnin ;)
