I just purchased an AC WC SN 43. The tractor is on rubber. I have steel front wheels and the rear steel lug rims. The rear rims are without the center as the rubber tire rims were welded to the centers.
Should I put the tractor on steel? Where could I purchase a band to go around the steel lugs so I could drive on hard surface roads? Thanks for your help.

Thanks everybody for the information. Yes-the tractor came from the factory on steel and the owner purchased rubber tires and rims for the front and rear. I believe I will put the tractor on steel.

Now this is just my personal opinion so do whatever you want after all it"s your tractor. Allis Chalmers pioneered rubber tires so i would leave it on rubber it was one of the famous things they did. Also you can purchase polyurethan lugs for steel wheel to make it legal.

I read Payne's post twice and,if I read it right, his tractor came with the steel wheels he's talking about. The wheels were cut off from the centers and then someone welded rubber tires mounted on different rims to the original centers. I don't know how authentic he wants to get and I'm not sure when Allis first equipped WC's with rubber tires (notice I said WC's,not U's). With a serial # of 43 I'd bet the tractor came with steel wheels. I'm sure there's someone here who might know.

Laverne Grief's WC which is one of the Waukesha's has rubber tires. Not sure if they are original or not. I have a vintage picture of a family unstyled WC on my desk that show all steel, so take your pick. I would say that if you have cutoffs that are most likely original then the tractor was probably on steel when new.
