Adjusting Ross Steering Gear

Hello:

I have a 1951 B that has a quarter turn of play in it. I read how to adjust it in the manual, but when I do it it turns rough, so I know something is not kosher. Any tips how to adjust it, properly?

First, you set end play (bearing drag?), then you adjust the shaft/worm gear tension. You MUST be at center of worm to do this adjustment (half way between left/right lock). If you are doing it this way, the "nose" that rides in the worm gear may be worn. Another reason is that you may have some chips in the worm gear. If you are talking about roughness after the 1st adjustment (removing shims to remove bearing play), your bearings may be bad, or the races (machined into ends of worm gear) may be pitted. It"s pretty easy to tear down to find the problem. Not so easy to repair the races..... .Stan

I disassembled the Ross unit on my '42 B and found the "nose" worn pretty badly. In addition, the bearings are pitted. The races are in fair condition. In searching the web, I find numerous companies which sell "balls", but as yet, none which offers a ball of the same diameter as those in the Ross. I may try a slightly larger ball and machine the cup and shaft just a tiny bit. Wish me luck. In another thread was mentioned a person who can supply a "new" nose. I had a friend weld (tig) some new material on my "nose" and will machine it back to OEM specs.

If I remember correctly, the balls are 5/16, and there are 10 balls on each side. I`ve seen steering boxes on Ebay, but they may not be any better. ....Stan

You can get the balls at most ACE hardwares. You find them in the drawers where the fasteners are located.

I just purchased 25 5/16" chrome steel bearing balls on eBay for $11 including shipping. Simple..... I just searched for bearing balls 5/16".

Dick, I posted this uder the "hand brake" post below, but it got buried pretty quick. So anyway, here`s my question again:

Dick, I have all the stuff you mentioned from a C. I plan on changing my `40 B over to foot brakes. Question: Do I need to cut the C side rails for looks only, or will they not fit as they are? Thanks....Stan

The C rails will work as is if you have fenders without the brackets that clip over the rails. Or you remove the clips.
