: My WD 45 has been giving me trouble - inconsistent running/hard to start, if at all, and apparent rich mixture or simply not firing of the cylinders (when I pulled the plugs once, three of them looked very dark, wet - I think the tractor was just barely running on number 1). Up unitl last fall, it ran just fine. I've rebuilt the carb (float, needle, seat are O.K.), clean the oil bath filter, changed oil, new points/condenser, static timing all O.K. Adjusted valves (no stuck valves found) Tried using a timing light (new one from car parts place) and I see flakey spark performance. My Questions at this point are: : 1. do modern timing lights not work well on 6 volt batteries? : 2. Does a WD45 require a series balast resistor with the coil? : 3. I get fuel in the carb intake after cranking - is this normal if the engine doesn't start after a lot of cranking? : 4. What is a normal DC coil current? MAybe the coil primary is shorted and thus weak or missing spark. : 5. Does the air intake chamber (above the oil bath) get clogged to the point of severe choking? How to clean this? : Any other ideas or tips would be helpful. I will do a compression test, but the somewhat sudden/intermittent nature of the problem turns me away from low compression/ring problems. : Jan Loisch Try installing new plugs (NOT Champions) before you go through any more angst. Had a similar problem with my WC and after chasing down all of the angles you are addressing, it turned out to be just a new set of plugs.
