Hello!
I usually read and post on the Oliver board, but I saw something yesterday that was amazing to me. About one mile south of Greenwood, AR, where I am living currently, I saw an HD-41 bulldozer sitting on a hill. I went up to examine it, and was amazed by the size of it! I noticed the engine right away: a Cummins VT-1710. I used to work for Cummins in Saint Paul, MN, and we used a lot of 1710's on generator sets. This tractor has been sitting for a few years. How many of these giants were built? Are there any running tractors out there yet? Do any A-C collectors have one in their collection? Thank you in advance for your replies!

I have an HD 41 Allis Chalmers Dozer Tractor with a Cummins V-12 Turbo Diesel located in Roseville, California, with only 3424 operating hours that I am planning to sell.

I also have a Wabco 1200 Articulated Loader with a 14 yard clam shell bucket (capacity 37,000 lbs. lift) and a Cummins V-12 Turbo Diesel also located in Roseville, California,with only 3531 operating hours that I am planning to sell.

Take your camera next time. I think I read a description years ago that it would windrow trees as it went through the woods. That's a tractor.

Based on Steves description, I'm wondering how you'd even move it if you did get it? 18 foot blade! That would take out 6 foot of fence going through any gate I have. Course, I'd be glad to make new gates to have it!

I worked at the test center in Illinois in the 70's. WE built the 41 in the springfield Illinois plant. dont remember the exact year, but proablby started about 1972 production. Made about 1 tractor a day in good times (400 year) stopped production about 1984. With the energy problems in the late 70- early 80s, we were donw to about a tracto a month in sales--- not good. The 41 was about 80 tons with a 18 foot blade. Had a 3 speed full power shift F-R Twin Disc transmission and torque converter. The 1710 was the motor set at 525 HP. In is beginning it was the largest tractor on earth. Remember, this was 30 years ago. THe 41 was continually plaged by final drive problems. Had about 10 modifications in 12 years. Early 80s design was a very nice unit. The 31 tractor was the same basic unit, about 2 ft shoreter and had a 1150 cummins striaght six set at 410 HP. Now that was one nice tractor. Some say the best crawler AC ever built. Weight was 60 tons.

My book says they were made from 1969 -1974 and had a CMNS VT-12-635cu 800hp !! Bare tractor weight 121500 The HD 41B made 1970-1983 had CMNS VT-1710-c524 hp weight 132,135lbs The 31 KT-1150-C wt.112,105 I just heard of a farmer in SE PA that buys every one he can and dismantles them to keep a fleet going he uses. I believe they would have been used in strip mining in western Pa and West Virgina I could have used one for a couple of hours used a 850C deere for 3 days and a D4c series 2 for alittle over a week bet one of these machines would have done the job in half a day:)

your right CH. i left out the original motor, the 1710 was much more popular. the weight of 130,000 is bare tractor, put on a 18 ft blade and a ripper and it was around 160,000. quite a few went to Penn to the mines. BIG dealer was "Highway Equipment" in its day.

Thank you, Steve! Wow! That is a lot of really great info! While I was living in Saint Louis, I worked part time for a farmer near Mount Olive, IL. Not far from Springfield. I did not realize that AC had a plant there. One funny thing about this tractor. The blade is off of it, but the blade carrier is nowhere to be seen! Maybe somebody stole it one night! Thanks for the reply!

In 1970-71 I worked for a Branch dealer of McClung Logan Equip. Co. in Westernport MD. They were in the coal fields of MD,W Va.& Pa. I worked with a traveling Mech. which on this occasion we had to pull the motor from one of these Giants. I was young and just a helper and can still here Doug DeBerry say,I"ll have you in the belly pan un-bolting the torque converter before long!! Never did get that task. Had a Pettibone crane lift the motor on to a flat bed truck to be blocked and chained for its journey. I can still remember when it was back together for the test drive. The dirt pile Doug got into with that 41, pushed dirt up over the top of that massive blade.
I was imperssed. I think there are still a very few in the mountains around this area in some of the old strip sites.
