just sold a pile of honda's that were blocking shop and gonna start on my D17 soon...is there a good brand of aftermarket gaskets available for the diesel or should i grin and bear it at AGCO?

I would grin and bear it with the agco. I have read where some of the after markets dont hold up at all. When you try to cut pennies (esp on this engine) you will more than likely be making more work. If it were an oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket, then aftermarket would be fine since the tolerances are not that close on those, but with this engine and fire rings, etc, go with the oem part.

I just got a AGCO valve grind gasket set. The head gasket is a fel-pro brand. My personal belief are the best money can buy. And at $49 a good deal.

thanx yall...thats good to know...i've used Felpro for years...thats what i meant by aftermarket.

the head gasket was $49. or the whole head set?

That price sounds like a gas head gasket. The diesel will be a little higher if the price hasn't changed too much recently. An aftermarket headgasket set is running around 85, so agco will probably be a little hight, around 100 or so would be my guess. Never know though lol. You can find some deals or some rip offs. Good luck with your 17. Let us know how the head and motor look. I hope for the best for you with the tractor.

i appreciate tha help from all of yall...i'm about 99% sure i OD'd the head gasket with too much ether but after hearing about problems people have with this engine i'm almost skeeeeerd to look ;)

i was figuring around $125. for a good set...if AGCO dropped prices i sure wont gripe.

The agco kit i got had head,valve cover, exhaust, water outlet and some other small ones. The kit at the automotive store was mcord gaskets for $52. I'm happy so far
