guys, maybe you can help me. i have a 1955 wd45. it runs good in nutreal, but when you put it in gear it starts running real rough and acts like it wants to stall. i have checked the timing which was ok, and the carb is a new one. i have changed the plugs and points and rotor. its still doing the same thing....any ideas would be appriciated.

ok guys heres what happened today. replaced the coil,rotor,condenser,points, and checked the wiring, and the gas is flowing freely....i started it and it idled great, i put it in gear drove it for about 1/2 mile. it still sputtered as i drove,i noticed some grey smoke and then all of a sudden the it backfired and the muffler blew off like a rocket going into space....it continued to run and sputter like it did before....iam really at a lost now....by the way this is my 6 year old daughters tractor...she is a big "ac" fan...lol, so i would really like to get it running for her

John,
Two things I would also check.Pull dist. cap or cover,(mag or dist.)Check to see if rotor shaft isnt worn and doesnt shift side to side.Could cause erratic ignition.Also make sure your cap isnt cracked and that it doesnt have a carbon track in it.Itll be a black line running from terminal to terminal or from terminal to rotor contact.Hope this helps.

John, Is the gas flowing freely out of the carb? You may have an obstruction in the tank that is restricting the fuel. Replaced the sediment bowl on our SMTA a few years ago and had the same trouble. The casting was not machined very well and restricted the fuel when working the tractor. It was okay at idle and moving when not under load. I dressed up the restriction and it works fine. Also, on our WD45 we experienced the same symtoms. This time I found the end from a gas nozzle in the tank. It would move around and intermittently cover the hole. Tom

It's a good bet that your points are too wide! Also make sure your points are following the cam at hi rpm's (check point spring). Have had this to throw me for a loop.

My IH crawler had the same problem. After lots of fiddling with the carb, coil, distributor cap, etc. I finally traced it to severely worn distributor drive gears. Just another place to look. Good luck!

How long have you had the new carb on it? Did it run fine for a while after you put it on? Just thinking it might need some fine tuning.

lol, I did think of that, but no the brakes are free....i thought it might be the timing, but its ok...i drove it today for about 100 yards, it stalled twice while i was driving it....sounds like its getting to much gas, but thats not the problem

I'm not much of a mechanic, but have you looked at the governor? I don't know a whole lot about them, but have heard their pretty simple to work on. Also might be the clutch. For your sake I hope not - thats a big job. Does it do it in all gears including reverse? When its' idling can you move the throtle lever all the way down and it still runs smooth at high rpm?

Have you checked the govoner? It sounds like it is not kicking in. The brakes are not jammed or stuck are they? Will it roll freely when pulled? Do you have any smoke? What color is it? It may be that there is something in your tank too? Is it a diesel or a gas? Also, check the distributer cap, coil, wires, etc. It may be grounding out, the cap may be loose or the coil may be about shot and movement is causing it to die. Just some ideas.

it seems to do it in all gears. I have not replaced the coil, and i have not looked at the govenor....thanks for the ideas i will try these in the morning.

could be a bad condensor too...somebody on this board had probs with a brand new one in the past 2 weeks.
