Does anyone know if i can switch from a magneto to distributor on a 47? And if so which one?

My istallation came off a 40"s Farmall H and was a direct bolt on to my 49 AC B.

I added a solenoid from a 70"s ford pickup and a ballast resistor from NAPA enclosed in a rainproof elect box from Home Depot, all bolted nicely beneath the gas tank (close to the battery) on the right side.

We offer magneto parts, service and rebuilding if needed. We also offer a mag to distributor conversion for quite a few AC models. We offer an electronic ignition as an option for the distributor conversion. Drop us a line if interested...

I've sen people convert magneto units to battery ignition with a bit of external wireing, adding a condensor, and a coil, and keep using the breaker contacts in the maggy.. etc.

I can't disagree with the others, the model helps, but I'll a try a generic answer and maybe someone else can fill where my knowledge is weak. If it were a B or C, then you would get one off a late B or CA. If it's a WC, I'm not sure if that would be easy. The WC always came with a mag but the side mount remained the same (not like a car engine). I never had one so I don't have the manuals and I couldn't check if the gear on the WD or D-14 would match up. it may be possible since it looks like the same mount. Same for the WF. The crawlers were Detroit diesels by then so they are the easy answer.

My feelings were always to stay with the mag if you could. Crank starting is so easy. I've picked them up at shows for 15 bucks.

If it's a WC, I am pretty sure I was dead wrong, the later distributors have a completely different drive arrangement and mounting. Those like the D-14 would not work. Not sure about a WD.

You can put a magneto on a 47 Chevy. Just not the same magneto that you would put on a 47 Allis C or B.

like old said...it would help if we knew what tractor youre talkin about...if your mag wont fire and your looking for a cheaper way to get it running you can use the existing mag as a distributor...take the mag coil out and hook a wire from new conventional coil to points n condensor inside mag...use same gap on points...nuthin to it.

It might depend on a 1947 what. but you probably can but it does help to know what tractor your talking about
