When I was in the 9th grade our school bus drove by this tractor parked in a field every day. Today, 20 years later, it is now sitting in my driveway. The metal is straight and the tractor does not appear to have been abused just abandoned. The engine is not locked up. I have drained the fuel tank, it was full and apears to be rust free. The radiatior was empty, I refilled it and it is not leaking. I have drained and replaced the oil. I put in a battery and bumped the starter but did not crank the engine. What do I need to check on the engine electrical system to start the tractor and should I do anything else before cranking the engine?

How do I find out what year this tractor is?

Thanks for any help.

Philip - the 5040 was an AC import. According to Norm Swinford's book, it was a Fiat design built by UTB of Romania. Built from 1976-1980 and made 40.05 PTO HP. Serial Numbers's by year: 1976 SN 408445+ 1977 SN 410384+ 1978 SN 462148+ 1979 SN 473000+ 1980 SN 474000+. Those numbers in Norm's book are shown reversed for 1977 and 1978. I assume that was print error and changed them here to be numerically increasing each year.

Since it's a diesel if the engine cranks with the starter you have all mandatory electrial covered. I'd be sure to replace the diesel fuel filters and make sure the lines from tank to the filter housings are flowing clean fuel before trying to start it. Was the exhaust covered or open when it sat out? You might want to ensure the cylinders don't have anything in them before trying to start. Mike

Thanks for the reply Mike. It is greatly appreciated.

So mine is a 1977. I removed and checked the brushes and solenoid and bench tested the starter and it appears to be fine. The eshaust was not covered and had caved in on itself. I have removed the exhaust manifold and checked for visible debris, everything looked OK. I have also flushed all the fuel lines. I hope to install the starter this week and start the tractor. Thanks again for the information.

Phillip
