Tranmission cooler for newer Allis

I have given up on trying to get my AC 816 Backhoe transmission radiator replaced or repaired. They are pretty crucial to running when you shuttle a lot (the shuttle transmission starts smoking it gets so hot). It's a high pressure system of course and sits up front of the coolant radiator behind the grill. Perkins dealers suggested daisy-chaining boat coolers but they are way different. This shares some drive train with the 170 diesel and if anyone knows whether that or similar vintage machines with shuttle have a skookum cooler, let me know. I need to find something or I can't move much dirt with it. Any ideas are welcome (e.g., Allison coolers etc). They have to be small with a lot of surface area. The original is about 2 by 1 and 2 inches thick fins. I don't mind fabricating the mounts.

My 7000 allis has a tranny hydraulic combo cooler that is about 1ftx2ftx2in. It was replaced in 1991 I think is the date on it (I just bought the tractor), so it should be pretty easy to find at a dealer. I don't have the tractor where I can measure it and wont be near it for about 2 weeks. I would look at a 7000 near you (mine is a black belly, but redbelly should be the same or really close). Also, may try looking at a 190xt or 200, they should have a similar cooler as they have a similar hydraulic set up. Hope this helps. Maybe someone can take a pic of theirs and post it, I would if I was not at school. Good luck

Aren't these coolers on the return side of the pump or filter (meaning minimal pressure) ?
You might try Northern Hydraulics, or Surplus Center.
Or, look into an automotive/truck type automatic transmission cooler. Even a combine oil cooler might work.

Yes, you are right, it can make a nice horizontal fountain of pink but its not true high pressure. The truck idea might be the best as far as availability but I'm not that familiar with their size. I figured I'd better try to get it in the grill shell so the fan could do it's magic (plus the protection aspects). Spose I could call Frieghtliner and see what they put on theirs. I 've got a service center northeast of me. Thanks.

i've used air conditioning coils off cars for oil coolers on race cars before...used em on oil and tranny...should work fine on your tractor and LOTS of capacity.

I hadn't even thought of that because of the width. I suppose they could be mounted sideways though. That would be a simple and cheap fix. Thanks.
