AC WD Mag and timing

Hello,

The WD I have acquired has an ignition coil mounted above the magneto. The high voltage output of the coil is fed into the mag through a hole drilled where the normal mag high voltage would feed internally to the center contact inside the cap. The mags points are used to fire the coil. No ballast resistor is apparent. Also, the firing order on the mag has be mistimed or moved so that the normal #1 plug is now #2, and on around. It runs smooth as silk, but I would like to go back to the original magneto. Anybody seen this before? Was this somebodies idea of a fix for a bum mag?

To TEX Denny and Old:

Here is a delayed thanks for your input. Have been offline here and just now getting back. Guess I will attend to the other problems with the WD before I mess with something that is working well right now. Somewhat concerned over the lack of ballast resitor though, might try experimenting.

Good info from Old. I did this same thing to a WD I had just to get it running so I could find out what else was wrong. The mag was not working and I didn't want to spend amy money until I'd finished evaluating it. The converted mag worked so well that I used it for a couple of years until the cap failed, too. So I replaced the whole thing with a distributor.

Regarding the timing thing, it will run in four different positions. Allis choose one particular spot and did all the tractors from the factory that way. It won't run any different after you re-position the mag. I'd leave it there while you're deciding on whether to rebuild, buy a rebuilt or switch to distributor. When you make the switch, you can set it to the Allis position.

In the meantime, it should serve you well unless something else like the cap or rotor goes bad.

And it is a very good fix for a bum mag.

Seen that done a lot, yep its a way to fix a mag with out spending the $$ to do it right. magneeders.com will probably have a rebuilt mag for it. You can also call them at . 417-358-7863. The guys name is Jack. He does a real good job on them and can also answer most of your questions about mag problems.
