I don't see the left brake drum for my B.

If the set screw loosens, can it slide toward the center so far that I would not even see it from the band opening? Anyone ever seen this happen.

Looks like I can pull the final as an assembly and get at the pinion shaft, right?

Yep, I think so. I did it once some time back. I think the hardest thing was getting it blocked up safely. Thing was heavy enough that I had its weight carried on my hoist the hole time. It had several shims on the outside shaft bearing and I think I had to pull one after reassembly. I can't remember what the process was of figuring that out but I'll see if I can find it, it seemed like it was crucial! I think I had bad inner bearing.

I have a note that the factory outer bearing is actually a Timken 14138A if you need to buy one. Unfortunately I didn't mark down the rest.

Your idea on the brake drum sounds plausible but if you can't see it at all or feel around and find it with a bent welding rod, is it possible someone left it out in earlier reassembly?

possible it is not there. I am going to pull out the band and look around a bit with a mirror. One of the bearings appears to be tapered so shims would be important, I will review the service book. Looks like the whole final will be heavy, especially if the wheel hub is still on but I probably should pull that from the sounds of it.

update: brake drum found - Mr Mouse moved it in reply to mace56, 11-06-2005 17:24:52
After I pulled the brake band out and dug a very nice mouse nest out, I found the drum slid down the shaft. I was able to get it back but will still have to pull the final to replace key and setscrew.
My theory is that Mrs Mouse decided that the house was just too small for the family so Mr. Mouse has to remodel and move a few walls to make more room. The brake band lining broke as I pulled it out. I bet that thing is a real trick to get around the drum. The lower hinge was all rusted and stuck solid so it bent the band as it went around the corner.

That's what I forgot to mention about the hoist. Getting the weight off the shaft was critical. It was nearly impossible to get out of there. It seems like stared and fought with the thing for a couple of days trying not to stress it, keep from prying on the surfaces. I don't remember it being real fun.

you block up the bevel gear compartment in the middle, and let one rear tire set on the ground. take the other tire off so it is lighter on that side. if you are going to disassmble the findal drive, take the wheel hub off the axle now. i you are just looking at the top shaft, you "could" leave thehub on, but i dont due to the extra weight.--- now you need an engine hoist or overhead crane. strap the final drive housing just to the center of the bull gear housing. lift up slightly and take the 4 stud- nuts off the case to the bevel gear. slide the funal drive case away from the tractor and off the studs. if you use a hoist, this iwll take 5 minutes, no binding. the top shaft (pinioon, and bottom shaft (bull pinion) or axle, both have tapered bearings on each end. shims are needed on the outside of the top shaft and the inside of the bottom shaft (behind the tin 3 inch round cover). you add enough shims to keep things snug, no slop, but easy rolling. the book helps.
