When shifting from any forward to reverse or the other way around, there is a clunking noise. What is the probable cause and the easiest way to get at and fix the problem

Clunking often comes from the spin out rims. After years of use, even when fully engaged, they aren't sufficiently tight. I've thought of putting a sheet metal shim between the rim and the large clamps. I think this should work but it hasn't come up yet on the list of "to do". You could also try to build up the eceentric with a welder but this takes a fair amount of skill.

Anyway, Eldon sure hit on a common problem.

Make sure the rim clamps are all tight on the wheels.

i'm assuming youre stopping the tractor completely and allowing gearbox to quit moving before shifts...off top of my head i'd say either the splines on tranny input shaft are rusty causing clutch to stay partially engaged or clutch needs adjusting...maybe somebody else knows of a particular quirk on this tractor.
