Notes on AC G Creeper (Special Low)

People were discussing this a couple weeks ago and most of us have the recollection that all G's had the special low gear set and even it was sold as a 3 speed. I did some looking in my past notes today. At least initially, the G could be purchased with or without the creeper. It required an additional shaft, fork and gear set. The alternative was an AC parts number set for the spacers to hold the extra gearset spacing. An additional shaft was also necessary for the creeper and the pins were installed differently if not present. The only real question would be whether in practice, they changed to a production line process where the gear sets and extra shaft went in to all machines to avoid inefficiency in manufacturing and filling orders. That can't be answered by looking at their original marketing intent to have the two variants nor all the part and service manual references.

In the discussion it was pointed out that a tractor dealer never saw a 3-speed only version and my experience was the same. An original AC factory dealer I spoke with years back hadn't ever sold one without the creeper.

No conclusions here of course but ACs original intent was to market and maintain both the three speed and the four and their documentation showed this throughout. I'd say if someone did have the 3 speed, they may have the more valuable machine.

You'd know by the presense of 2 verses 3 shift rails under the side cover.

I think you are likely purdy close in your asumptions. The man that wrote about this orginaly over on the other A-C site sold them and is till sharp as a tack. He says that they found the creeper parts in any G they opened up but most of the time the rail was pushed past nutrual so it could not be shifted in. He did not say this was true of the earliest of the model or give a time line to it that I remember. I will add that anybody whos main claim to "expert" comes solely from reading and looking at pictures in sales, parts and operators literature will sooner or later find out that they are often enough a lousy source to derive facts to bet the house on. Especialy the sales literature and low production units. I remember all too many discrepencies in the manuals back when I was buying and using A-C equipment on my farm. My most trusted sources are those who were there.

wonder how many dealers ''sold'' the upgrade by lining up shift rails
