AC B shut-off question

Hello yet again. When I first got this B a few months ago, I asked if shutting it off by turning the fuel off would hurt the motor at all; everyone agreed that it wouldn"t. The reason I asked was because the former owner said if it wasn"t turned off like that "the carb would overflow and it"d be hard to start". Well, I tried to turn it off by the switch the other day (it"s an electric start, if that matters), and it just kept running no problem. The headlight switch works fine, however the ignition on/off doesn"t seem to do anything. What"re your suggestions? Thanks again!

Hello farmerwannabe, what is happening is your push pull switch is not making a ground internally. Therefore not suppling a good ground to chassis to ground out your magneto. I had the same problem with a model C. You can replace your push pull switch with a single pole single throw toggle switch untill you can locate replacement push pull switch, if you want to have original type kill switch....HTH

i agree with Keith...also if you use a regular toggle switch and it has a on/off plate...reverse it...on will be off and off will be on since the ground will be a complete circuit on the magneto.

Actually, a little more information would help in this situation. There are a number of ways to shut the engine down whether it's 6V or 12V. First thing, is the system 6 or 12V? Second, is it distributor fired, or mag fired? Is your B equipped with a push/pull or toggle type switch for ignition functions or key switch? Once these questions are known, it's much easier to answer your question so you can see what your options are. Give us a call or drop us a line, I'd be happy to help you out...

Sorry for the lack of information guys. This still has the 6 volt system with a magneto (no distributor) and a generator. The switch on the bottom right of the dash is a two-position push-pull switch (on or off)and it doesn"t seem to do anything. I"m going to get one of Steve"s 12 volt kits when I have the funds to do so, but in the meantime, is this something to be concerned with?
Also, how do I get ahold of Steve"s shop to get the headlight retaining/insulating gaskets? Thanks!

It sounds like you converted to 12 volt and are using an alternator to charge the battery. After the alternator is going, it will feed voltage back to the ignition switch which will keep the coil hot.

If you have a mag, the switch should provide a ground to the side of the magneto.

I have a hand crank ('39) B and the only way that I normally stop it is by shutting off the gas. If I don't it's a real pain in the as* to start. When I shut off the gas, I can get it to start (after turning the gas back on) on the second or third crank. If I am only shutting it off for a few minutes (10 or less) then I use the magneto kill but other wise I run the carb out of gas....

If it is a magneto ignition... and electric start with an auto style spring loaded key switch.. I don't doubt turning the key off doesn't do anything.. look for a magneto kill wire.

if it has a battery ignition ( I don't own a B ).. then look at your wireing.. where is the coil getting power from.. etc.

Has it been converted to 12 volts and an alternator put on?? If so then your problem is with the wireing. You need a diode or light in the wire coming from the #1 termanal on the alternator.
