You cannot just remove a shim. You have to remove metal from the bearing shell too to maintain the proper "crush". Basically it is like this. Put the bearing together in the rod or main with dry shells,no shims, finger tight. Measure the gap between the bearing cap and rod or block, put in shims to give you .0015 (I think, better check) bearing shell crush. Assemble with plastigauge, check. If you need to remove say .001" from the bearing shell to get .001 reduction in size, youneed to remove .001 from the shim pack too. To remove the metal from the bearing shell, carefully file. I put the file on a bench and slide the bearing over it. Then check the height of the bearing shell on a flat surface with a dial indicataor before and after fileing. To do thes put the shell ends down and slide it under a dial indicator and observe the reading before filing, file a little ,check again until it has come down to what you want. Assemble againg with plastigauge and check clearance. When right, assemble final time with oil on bearing, but dry between bearing and cap, and rod or block. It takes a while to do a carefull job, don't rush. I spent hours to do all the bearings. Make sure it spins after each one. It will get harder and harder as you put the rods on the crank, but youcan tell.

Bennie, you can make them. You can also probably buy them from Allis Chalmers. I made mine from brass shim stock. You will need to use Plasti-Gauge to determine if they are needed and how many are needed if they are needed. I get my Plasti-Gauge from NAPA but you can probably get them elsewhere.

Texas Denny's got the trick there, plastigage. To see more about it, click on Engine Kits above and scroll down to the "Information Center". It has an article called "Determining you rebuild needs" or something close to that and talks about using plastigage to measure your crank journals (or it may say rod bearings)... I'd sure like to have invented that stuff ;-). Really watch your torque, it makes a difference. It's really cheap so pick up a couple of sizes. I believe they were green and red for what you need.

I don't remember if it was that article or another but you can cheat a bit on tightening up your crank and rod journals by filing down the bearing ends ... very carefully as in high grit laid out on glass, then reshimming. My father-in-law used to talk about how they'd do that to keep their old WC (the old non-styled type) from knocking. They couldn't afford the rebuilds.
