I bought an alternator that came off a John Deere. It is a Delco with the internal regulator. Two wires come off the regulator plug. I know the one on the right is for the voltage to start the regulator. But what is the left wire for? I'm guessing it is for ground to the regulator. But why couldn't that be done internal to the alternator? Is it a signal for something else? I've done a couple of these before but never terminated that wire.

Denny: I'm sure BC is right there should not be a need for ground. I'm not great on coversions my 17 is still a generator or I'd check it out. I will any way. It ony has 2 wires. I rebuilt my carb yesterday. I may be sucking air around the manifold. I have a stutter on fast exceleration. I can't seem to adjust it out. runs very well other than that. I'm also doing a compression check as soon as time. I'm really enjoying this. Jim

i aint Jim but i've rigged a couple of them...if memory serves me right the S terminal is signal from light or gauge and the I terminal goes to ignition side of switch...neither one is ground

If I'm reading you correctly, that other wire on the connector can be left floating. I believe that is what I have done on other installations years back. I put a Diode between the regulator and the ignition switch. Without the diode, the coil stays hot and you can't shut down the tractor.
