D17 running rough

The new to me D17 ran fine yesterday for the hour I drove it and also for about 30 minutes while cleaning horse stalls. However when I started back to the back pasture with it, it started cutting out. So, I choked it and it started to die then unchoked it and it ran fine for about 10 seconds then started spitting and sputtering again. Its not blowing any black smoke like its running rich and it has at least 5 gallons of gas in it. What is the first and last things to try? Thanks in advance. By the way I love the tractor except the 3pt set up needs some serious work.

Also wondering if someone could post a close up picture of their 3pt set up so I could see it. I'm going to have a TON of questions as this is my first tractor other than a Farmall or a ford so be ready fellas'. Thanks in advance!!

Could be carburetor but sounds more like gas supply problem to me. Low flow from the tank will let it run good for a while but sputter and quit when the carb bowl is empty. You need to clean everything from the carb to the tank. I think the tank is the most likely culprit because of the hauling. Drain the gas and pull it off and rinse it thoroughly. If there is a lot of gunk in it, you may need to seal it.

Sounds like it has some junk in the carb and you may need to do a carb rebuild. You might try to help it a little by pulling out the drain plug at the bottom of the carb and see if you get some water/rust/junk out that way if it helps good if not you will probably need to clean up the carb, your main jet is probably getting clogged

Thanks for the replies. I'll give those a try. I don't think it is the condenser unless something just all of the sudden happened because yesterday I ran it for probably an hour with no problems. After hearing your responses I wonder if the trip home on the trailer didn't loosen up some gunk in the tank or something.

I do not know if the D-17 had a pipe on the sediment bowl That would trap water in the fuel tank but this is what I would check. I ran a C one time and it would run fine until you went at higher speed across undulating ground. It had water trapped in the fuel tank that would sloush and get some in the carb.

Yep a bounching on a trailor can do some strange stuff. I'd say it broke loose some stuff in the carb and now the main jet is clogging up on you.

it wouldnt hurt it any to take off and clean carb...most of the time you dont even need a kit IF your carefull...i think theyre referring to needle and seat under float but blow everything out with air and or a good non envioromentally friendly carb cleaner such as gumout or b12 chemtool...if the tank is extremely rusty i've fixed em temporarily by unscrewing the petcock and put a short length of fuel line [1''] up in fitting so it doesnt suck from bottom of tank...chainsaw hose works good cause its made to sit in gas

Well this morning before I even started it up I drained the fuel from the carb. Started it up and ran it for about 40 minutes or so and it did fine. I think I will do the deal in the gas tank and put a hose 1 inch up so it doesn't suck off of the bottom. Gonna pull it in the shop this winter and go over it completely and maybe even repaint it! How about putting an in-line fuel filter between the bowl and carb?

if you go with inline filter make sure its for a gravity flow and NOT pump fed...wont be enuff flow if its automotive type...mesh is too fine

Well on a D17 carb I'm not sure how its set up. If I rememberright its at the bottom of the float bowl.

Good point. Also unplug the inlet (outlet from the tank) and make sure you are getting a free flow. With several tractors, I've found it starving because of rust in tank's outlet. If I found that, I'd fish around with a welding rod (acetylene type, not the arc type ;-)), break it up and drain off the mess.

Might also be interesting to see if it runs normally once it's cold. Might suspect a condenser though usually it would shut off completely when it got hot.
