Have a 1951 AC CA restored and was wondering if anyone knows what the oil pressure should be at? Tractor runs great and oil pressure runs between 3 to 5 is this correct?

Some time ago someone dealt with the oil pressure problem. I have a 1951 CA and was using a Wix oil filter. I have only had this tractor for just over a year. It had a low oil pressure, the solution as given in this forum was to go to a Fram C 159 filter. Had some discussion with the guys at the parts house. Finally convinced them to get the Fram filter. I put it on and raise the oil pressure by at least 8 lbs or more. The Wix filter is too restrictive. The Fram lets more oil through. You will notice that the pressure gauage is after the filter. So you have a by pass system. When the filter is too restrictive, the top end is starving for oil. It works for me, hope it helps others with the same problem.

Make sure you have the right filter, the 51 I have was bought real cheap because there was water in oil and poor oil pressure. I Put right filter on and right muffler and I have a machine that I would not trade for nothing.

chalmersbob is correct. The bearings are splash lubricated so adjustment won't help other than cam bearings which cannot be adjusted - only replaced. You may have a bad oil filter. Fram 159 will work with this tractor. NAPA and several others will not. A good filter will look like it is stuffed with cotton and will have a wooden stick in the center. Pull out the stick before putting on the filter base. There should be a metal tube sticking up out of the base which goes into the hole left when the stick is pulled out.

pressure in the ca motor comes thru camshaft. motors with many rebuilds often have never had cam bearing replaced. clearence should be .005 max many of these old tractors have had many in frame re-ring and bearing jobs. as a result the oil pump has never been serviced. rotor blade springs, rotor end play. and relief valve spring are all suspect. the tractor must be split at torque tube to get to oil pump as it drives from rear of cam. check filter stem and filter first.

ADJUSTING BEARINGS WILL NOT HELP OIL PREASURE IN A B ENGINE. IT IS NOT A PRESURIZED ENGINE. BEARING ARE LUBED BY OIL THAT DRIPS OFF THE CAM, ONTO THE CRANK AND RODS. CK TUBE AND FILTER TYPE. MUST BE STRING FILLED TO BUILD UP PRESSURE. BOB

A few years back when I was a kik working on a farm I ran a B that had seen a bit of use, was on the second or third engine rebuild and ready for another. However it kept on going for the 5 or so years I was there. It had little oil pressure when cold, 20 weight oil, and the needle was on or nearly on zero when the engine was hot from working in the summer. That engine was loose and worn, however it had oil flow which is all they need I guess. We never babied it. Had an old flathead ford V8 in one of the farm trucks with the same syndrone too.

That is a bit light. The guage is 20# at max and pressure should be at mid scale - about 8-15. May need to pull the pan and adjust your bearings.

Adjustment may do the trick if you have reasonable compression and no oil burning.

Good luck.

the motor is different than most cars in that the oil is filtered on a car, tne routed to the bearings. on older AC tractors, 15% of the oil is filtered and dumped to sump. the other 85 % goes to lube the motor. if your filter is poor, or missing the internal 1/4 inch stand tube, or holes in the tube are too big,,, all will pas too much oil and make the gauge read low. these are things to check prior to internal work. i like 10 w 30 motoro oil, but you might try straight 30 wt and see what pressue you get. in the end, you might drop the pan and check the suction screen.

if the filter doesnt fix the problem, remove the pan and disassemble the oil pickup. Even if it looks good externally it can be nearly pluged. learned this the hard way.
